A woman opens a text from a friend. It's a nude photo with her face on it. She never took it. It's a deepfake, a fake picture made by A.I. from one public selfie. Apple banned the apps that make these fakes.

APPLE BANS NUDIFY APPS ▶ 0:14

A ban can't pull back a fake that's already shared.

According to The Tech Buzz, Apple changed its App Store rules on October sixteenth. Apps can't make private images of people without consent. But critics note that Apple left X and Grok in the store. Grok was tied to the scandal behind the ban.

For investigators, proof saved early beats any ban. Apple locked one door. The biggest door is still open.

So who's guarding the face you hand over at the airport?

A traveler steps up to the airport camera. She walks through in seconds. That's T.S.A. facial recognition, and the scan itself works fine. T.S.A. deletes her photo right after the match.

TSA CAN'T PROVE PHOTOS DELETED ▶ 0:51

You can change a password, but never your face.

According to the Electronic Frontier Foundation, a federal watchdog found a gap. A contractor fixing the system could pull out passport and license photos. T.S.A. didn't know. It couldn't prove anyone deleted those copies. The system runs on more than two thousand machines at over two hundred fifty airports.

For investigators, the lesson is chain of custody. That means a <phoneme alphabet="ipa" ph="ˈrɛkərd">record</phoneme> of who touched the data, and when. Deleted means nothing without a receipt.

A face scan can leak. It can also point at the wrong person.

Kimberlee Williams, a grandmother, spent six months in a Maryland jail. Police trusted a face match that was wrong. Most people learn the biometric authentication meaning from their phone. It checks one face against one saved face. A police search checks one face against millions.

JAILED BY A WRONG MATCH ▶ 1:34

A face match from a big search is a clue, not proof.

According to the A.C.L.U., police have wrongly arrested at least fourteen people this way. The math shows why. Say a system mixes up two faces once in a million tries. Search ten million faces, and about ten wrong people pop up.

Investigators still have to check every match. A match should start the questions, never end them.

Three stories, one lesson. Apple banned the apps after the fakes spread. T.S.A. deletes photos but can't prove every copy is gone. Police trusted a match without other proof. Each time, the face moved faster than the proof. Ask who can show their work.
