Baby Passport Photo: Fix the Hand
The State Department could turn down your baby's passport photo. You could end up watching your flight leave without your baby. There's a man in Maryland who faked his passport papers. Prosecutors said he pretended to be another man and used that man's personal details. The State Department looks at your baby's photo too. Will they accept her photo the first time? By the end, her passport will stay hers.
She'll be using the same passport photo for 5 years. Border officers all over the world will check that face.
Your baby can't hold her head up on her own. You tuck your hand behind her head to keep it steady. The State Department will reject it if even a fingertip shows.
What gets a careful parent's application turned down? You might wait 2 weeks for the rejection letter.
You did everything right, and you still failed. The light was good, and the baby was calm. Your hand showed up in the picture, and that ruined it.
Here's how one man cheated the passport rules.
A man named Beautiful Life Allah lived in Gwynn Oak. He started his scheme in August 2022. He used somebody else's Social Security number.
Prosecutors said he faked a custody order, the court paper that says who looks after a child. He used it to apply for his child's passport.
That number belonged to a man who was in prison. He applied for a driver's license in that man's name. But he put his own face on the passport form.
In March 2026, he was sentenced to 3 years. Some of the fake applications got through at first.

If they reject it, you have to do the whole thing all over again. On her second try, the same rules still apply.
Your own passport is good for 10 years. Hers is only good for 5 years. Her face changes a lot faster than yours does. You'll be doing this again soon.
Babies under about 3 months old get one exception. They're allowed to have their eyes closed in the photo. Older babies need to have their eyes open.
They'll also reject it if there are shadows under her chin. You can't use an app to smooth her skin, either.
You might be flying out in 12 days. You could get the rejection letter after your plane leaves.
The State Department wants passport photos clean, with nothing in them but the face. To them, your hand holding her steady counts as another person in the photo. You're being careful, and that's what gets her photo rejected.
Every border officer she meets will treat that photo as her. They should see no hand and no shadow, just her face. Allah put his own face on someone else's name. Officers believe the face they see on that page.
Lay her flat on a white sheet. Keep your hand out of the picture.
Put a white sheet down on the floor. Lay her on it, right next to the light from a window. Take the picture from straight above, with no hand showing.
Her photo proves what her face looks like. Her papers prove what her name is.
Wait until she's calm and she's been fed. Hold your phone straight above her. Keep the window light coming from beside her face. Then check every corner of the photo for fingers.
