Your face can match perfectly, and you still might not belong in that building. That's not a glitch. That's actually how these systems are supposed to work. But most people, and honestly a lot of businesses too, treat a face match like it's the whole answer. It isn't.

Right now, New York City is fighting over this exact idea. There's a bill that would put sweeping limits on facial recognition in stores, offices, and apartment buildings. Industry groups say the technology is a frontline defense against theft, fraud, and even violence. Privacy advocates say it's just surveillance with a friendly name. And if you've ever walked past a camera at a building entrance, which is basically all of us, this argument is about you. So here's the question threading through the whole thing: when a machine recognizes your face, what has it actually proven?
Let's start with what a face match really does. The system compares your face to a stored template, basically a mathematical map of your features. When it finds a close enough match, it says, "I know who this is." That's identification. It answers one question, who are you? But getting into a building takes three separate questions, not one.
Question one, is this face in our system at all? Question two, is this person's account still active today? People get fired. Leases end. Access expires. Question three, are they even allowed through this specific door, at this specific time? A perfect match on question one means nothing if the answer to two or three is no. For a security team, skipping any of those is a hole. For you, it's the difference between a stranger walking into your lobby and being stopped.

Now, here's a number that stopped me. Even a system that's ninety-nine percent accurate gets roughly one match in a hundred wrong. In a building with five hundred people entering a day, that's about five wrong matches, every single day. Those slip through only if nobody built those extra checks behind the match.
And there's a hidden human decision buried in all this, the threshold. Every one of these systems has a dial. Turn it strict, and you block almost every impostor, but you also lock out real people who belong there. Turn it loose, and everybody sails through, including the wrong people. Think about a gym. A false accept just means someone got a free workout. So the gym sets the dial loose to keep paying members happy. Now a data center. One wrong person inside is a disaster, so they crank it tight and accept that employees get rejected sometimes. Same technology. Same algorithm. Completely different setting, because the stakes are different.
So why do so many people believe a match equals entry? Because that's how it's sold to us. "One-second verification." "Instant access." You see a confidence score pop up, ninety-eight percent, and it feels final. Case closed. But that ninety-eight percent only describes how confident the match is. It says nothing about whether you're allowed in.
The Bottom Line
And that's the whole thing. A face match is a recognition, not a permission. Identification asks "who is this?", but authorization asks "should they be here, right now?" Two completely different questions, and the machine only answers the first one.
So let me leave you with the simple version. Facial recognition can tell you who someone is. It cannot tell you whether they belong. A safe building has to check three things, the face, the account, and the permission, not just the face. That's why the New York fight isn't really about whether the technology works. It works. It's about what else has to be true before a door opens.
