A teenager opens the family laptop for homework. Before anything else, the screen asks her to prove her age. Microsoft Windows 11 age verification is on its way. This isn't one app asking. It's the same machine where Mom banks and Grandpa pays bills.

MICROSOFT'S NEW AGE GATE ▶ 0:13

One check now covers every app on the family computer.

According to the Bangkok Post, Microsoft plans to check your age once. After that, apps only learn an age range, not your birthday. That part is smart. But proving your age first can mean a selfie, an I.D. upload, or a government sign-in. Investigators will ask what that first step leaves behind.

Apps get a range. Microsoft may get your face.

Checking once sounds tidy. Apple just took a side on where that check belongs.

A twelve-year-old wants a game tonight. The app store may check her age first. Apple's Tim Cook backs that idea in Europe, under the proposed E.U. KIDS Act. Yet Apple fought a similar plan in Texas, warning it meant private details on every Texan.

Europe built its plan differently than Texas did.

APPLE BACKS EUROPE'S AGE PLAN ▶ 0:53

According to the European Commission, the E.U. plan stores proof of age in a digital wallet. It answers yes or no. No name. No birthday. But the E.U.'s own age verification app was reportedly hacked in under two minutes.

Scanned I.D.s sat there unlocked. For security teams, the build matters most.

A smart plan is only as safe as the app behind it.

Those plans are still on paper. In Greece, the start date is already set.

A sixteen-year-old taps her favorite app on New Year's Day. Access paused. She's old enough, but the system can't tell. Social media age verification starts in Greece on January 1, 2027, with an age limit of fifteen. The fix may take a face video, phone check, or I.D.

Unlocking a teen's account can cost your family's data.

GREECE DRAWS THE LINE AT 15 ▶ 1:36

According to ProtoThema, Greece's Kids Wallet only says yes or no. It never shares a birthday. Other checks can leave I.D. images in a company's files. Researchers point to breaches at those companies in 2024 and 2025. Investigators should ask who holds the scan.

The safest age check answers a question. It doesn't keep a file.

A laptop. An app store. A teen's phone. Age checks are moving to the front door. That means fewer ways to cheat. It also means fewer places holding more of your family's faces and I.D.s. The real question is what gets kept.

All three articles, every source, and today's CaraComp podcast deep-dives are in the description. Read them before your screen asks. See you tomorrow.
