Imagine losing your home, your car and your dog. Imagine the police match your face to a stranger's. That's what happened to a grandmother named Angela Lipps. She went to jail for somebody else's crime. And your face is online right now too. Could your face land you in jail? Soon you'll know how to stay free.
Testers put special glasses up against 5 real camera systems. And testers still got a face match on all 5.
IPVM, a security research group, tested the glasses. The testers also tried them against an iPhone's Face ID. Each pair costs about $70 to $100.
So what do those lenses actually block? And plain $25 sunglasses worked just as well.
You could buy a pair and feel safe. But you'd still walk right past the camera in the store. And your face would still get matched just the same.
Here's how it happened to Angela Lipps.
Angela Lipps is a grandmother from Tennessee. Police near Fargo matched her face to a photo from her social media. Marshals came for her in July 2025.
Fargo police accused her of bank fraud. But she'd never even been to North Dakota.
US marshals arrested her at gunpoint. They took her right out of her own house. Police allegedly just trusted the computer's match.
She spent nearly 6 months in jail. It all started with one photo on her social media.

You'd think a pair of special glasses would hide you. But you'd feel safe and still get matched.
And Lipps isn't the only one. Police in Detroit held Porcha Woodruff for 11 hours. She was 8 months pregnant at the time. Police held Robert Williams for 30 hours.
The lenses on these glasses block infrared light. Your eyes can't see that kind of light. Some pairs bounced back up to 80 percent of it.
Your pharmacy has cameras, and so does your subway. So does the street outside your building.
Lipps lost her income and her health insurance. Now she's suing for $10 million.
The company puts the word guard right on the box. You see that word and you feel protected. But IPVM still matched the person wearing them.
Your iPhone's Face ID reads a kind of light you can't see. But stores and police use cameras that see ordinary light. The glasses you buy only partly block that invisible light. You'd only be hiding from your own phone.
Skip the glasses and keep your money. Tonight, make your social media photos private.
Pick a profile picture that doesn't show your face. Delete old public photos you don't need anymore. Remove your tags from photos that strangers posted.
Anyone can copy a photo you post publicly. A photo you share with friends only stays with friends.

IPVM said it plainly in their write-up. Then 404 Media tested a different pair of glasses. Their reporters found the same problem.
Search your own name to find your public photos. Ask your friends to untag you from their photos. Tell your family those glasses won't hide them.
Randal Reid had never even been to Louisiana. He still spent 6 days in a Georgia jail. He later settled for $200,000.
Those glasses were never protecting your face. Your public photos are the real risk.
