A twelve-year-old in Malaysia logs into a game after school. Police say extremist groups have turned to game chats to recruit kids that young. Now Malaysia's government is studying age verification, Roblox included. It's a study, not a law. For parents, a face isn't a password. If it leaks, you can't change it. For investigators, game chat is now a place where kids get targeted.

Kids could one day need a face scan or I.D. to play.

According to Biometric Update, Malaysia's national digital I.D. already has over fourteen million sign-ups. A game check could plug straight into it.

A gate built to protect a twelve-year-old could become a file that outlives childhood.

Malaysia is still deciding. In America, adults already face these checks.

It's eleven at night in Florida. A woman opens a website. It wants her driver's license or a face scan. That's age verification. More than twenty-five U.S. states now demand these checks for adult sites and social media. Her I.D. and face go to a company she's never heard of. For security teams, every stored scan is a target for hackers.

Proving your age can mean handing a stranger your face.

AGE CHECKS SPREAD ACROSS AMERICA ▶ 0:57

According to the Electronic Frontier Foundation, Florida saw a rush after its law began. Demand for V.P.N.s jumped more than tenfold. A V.P.N. hides where you're browsing from.

More than tenfold.

People aren't running from safety. They're running from being filed.

Hiding won't help at the passport office. There, a machine judges your face first.

A dad snaps his passport photo at home against a white wall. It looks perfect. Weeks later, it comes back rejected. Anyone learning how to take a passport photo at home should know why. A rejection can cost about six weeks. That's long enough to miss a trip. For investigators, it's a reminder that blurry photos make shaky matches.

Software checks your photo before any person ever sees it.

WHY GOOD PHOTOS GET REJECTED ▶ 1:40

Researchers at the University of Reading study this hidden side of face photos. The rules want about ninety pixels between your pupils. Pixels are the tiny dots in a picture. His eyes may have sat just eighty-seven pixels apart.

The machine doesn't want your best look. It wants clean numbers.

A child's game. An adult's late-night browse. A traveler's passport. In all three, a machine reads your face before any person does. The real question isn't whether you'll be scanned. It's who keeps that scan, and for how long.
