When researchers at Georgetown Law studied documented wrongful arrests tied to facial comparison, they found one common factor every time. The corroboration step was skipped entirely. The match was treated as a verdict instead of a lead.
Now here's what most people get wrong. They assume a higher confidence score makes that corroboration step optional. It doesn't. Higher scores just narrow the pool of candidates. They don't eliminate ambiguity. Research on twins and unrelated lookalikes consistently shows that different people can produce near-identical facial geometry.
So here's the bottom line. Facial comparison technology gives investigators a lead — not an answer. The algorithm measures how similar two faces look, but it can't tell you they're the same person. When cases go wrong, it's almost never the technology that failed. It's the human step — the verification — that got skipped.
