According to the F.B.I.'s latest cybercrime report, deepfake fraud now accounts for at least eight hundred and ninety-three million dollars in losses. Not projected losses. Not theoretical risk. Reported losses — from cases already on the books.
That number matters whether you investigate fraud
That number matters whether you investigate fraud for a living or you've never once thought about deepfakes. If you've ever verified your identity on a video call, uploaded a selfie to open a bank account, or recovered a locked account by showing your face to a camera — this story is about you. Because deepfakes aren't just a misinformation problem anymore. They've moved inside the systems we use every day — identity verification, account recovery, remote onboarding. At European financial institutions, deepfakes now make up about one in fifteen fraud attempts. Back in 2021, that figure was less than one in a hundred. That's a jump of more than two thousand percent in roughly three years. The tools to detect fakes exist. So why isn't the problem shrinking?
Start with what most organizations actually rely on. A 2025 Biometric Update webinar found that about four in ten organizations depend primarily on something called liveness detection to stop deepfakes. Liveness detection checks whether a real, breathing human being is sitting in front of the camera. It confirms a pulse, essentially. But it doesn't answer a different question — is that live person actually who they claim to be? Those are two separate problems, and they need two separate tools.
The gap between those questions is exactly where attackers have moved. They use what's called an injection attack. Instead of holding a fake photo up to a camera — the old trick — they intercept the video stream itself before it ever reaches the verification system. The system sees a live feed. It passes the liveness check. But the face on that feed belongs to someone else entirely — or to no one at all. For anyone who's ever been asked to blink or turn their head during an identity check, that's the process being defeated. You did everything right. The system still got fooled.

Detection tools that perform well in a lab often degrade in real-world conditions — different lighting, compression artifacts from a video call, low-resolution webcams. A tool's accuracy score on a test bench doesn't predict how fast or how reliably it works when a fraud analyst has seconds to make a call. For investigators and fraud teams, the question has flipped. It's no longer "can we tell if this is fake?" It's "can we answer that in three seconds, before the transaction clears?" Time isn't just a variable in these cases. Time is the attack surface.
That speed problem is why the industry is pushing toward something called A.P.I.-first deployment. In plain terms, that means building detection directly into the platforms where impersonation actually happens — Zoom, Teams, contact centers, onboarding portals, case management systems. Not as a separate step someone runs after the fact. As part of the workflow itself, checking submissions the moment they arrive. The new standard formalizes requirements around remote identity proofing and — critically — documentation. That means organizations don't just need to detect a fake. They need to explain how they detected it, in a way that holds up to audit. Explainability isn't a nice-to-have anymore. It's a compliance obligation. Some security teams argue you don't need a dedicated deepfake detector at all — that stacking liveness checks with document verification and behavioral analysis should be enough. The logic sounds right. But injection attacks bypass the video stream before any of those layers even see it. A belt-and-suspenders defense only works if the attacker hasn't already cut the belt.
