A detection tool says it's ninety-six percent accurate. In the lab, maybe. In the real world, that number collapses to somewhere around sixty-five percent. That's barely better than a coin flip.

If you work investigations, insurance, legal, H.R., anywhere you handle images or video as evidence, this gap matters to you directly. Vendors selling deepfake detection tools publish benchmark scores in the mid-nineties. Those scores come from controlled lab environments with clean, uncompressed video and consistent lighting. But real media travels through email, social platforms, and messaging apps. Each one compresses the file differently, stripping away the very artifacts detectors rely on. So the question isn't whether detection tools work in a lab. It's whether they hold up when your case goes to deposition.
Humans don't fare any better. Across fifty-six peer-reviewed studies covering more than eighty-six thousand participants, average deepfake detection accuracy landed at about fifty-five percent. That's barely above random chance. A separate study out of the U.K. and U.S. showed more than two thousand consumers a mix of real and fake images and video. Only one in a thousand got every answer right. So neither humans nor machines reliably catch fakes in uncontrolled conditions. Where does that leave an investigator building a case file?
The industry's answer is shifting from detection to provenance. C.2.P.A., the Coalition for Content Provenance and Authenticity, co-founded by Microsoft, Adobe, and Intel, embeds a cryptographic trail at the moment of capture. It records which device took the image, when, and whether anyone altered it afterward. That trail survives compression, cropping, even reposting. On the standards side, Europe finalized CEN/TS 18099, the first formal standard for defending against synthetic media. It'll serve as the foundation for a global I.S.O. standard. And N.I.S.T.'s latest update, Special Publication 800-63-4, now mandates phishing-resistant authentication for high-assurance identity checks.

The real race isn't building a better deepfake catcher. It's proving where a piece of media came from before anyone questions it.
Detection tools trained in labs fall apart in the field. Humans do even worse. The path forward is cryptographic proof of origin, not a confidence score from a vendor's marketing sheet.
